This course includes a large number of topics ranging from sequences and series to polynomials. These topics will be explained in a conceptual way that will allow students to answer questions about them no matter how they are asked. Furthermore, students will be exposed to different question types that frequently appear on math competitions.
Students are required to have mastered the topics covered in the pre-algebra curriculum. They will need to remember those concepts because we will build upon them in this course.
This class will teach students how to solve for equations with one variable. They will also learn how to solve system of equations involving two variables by graphing, substitution, and elimination. Finally, students will learn about inequalities. Throughout the class, students will be walked through word problems involving the use of these skills.
Students will be given formal defintions for ratios and percents and will be taught the concept. They will apply their understanding of this concept to solve word problems such as acid and water solutions.
Students will learn the difference between direct, indirect, and joint variation. Word problems involving rates will be worked through as a class and independently.
This class covers formal defintions of terms relating to functions, evaluating functions, and composite functions.
Students will be introduced to quadratics in this class. They will learn about parent functions, family functions, vertex form, and standard form. Students will also learn about different features of the graph such as the x-intercept, y-intercept, vertex, and axis of symmetry.
Students will learn to factor by grouping and about factoring identities. They will also know how to use the quadratic formula.
This class covers how to complete the square. Different types of word problems will also be solved as a class.
This class will focus on graphs of polynomials with a degree more than two. They will learn about the end behaviors associated with different degrees and the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra.
This class includes exponential properties, the parent and family function forms of exponential functions, and exponential growth vs decay.
Students will learn about the difference between arithmetic and geometric sequences/series. They will learn how to formulas such as the one to find the nth term.
