Course Summary

This course is designed for students looking to achieve a solid foundation in many of the concepts learned in Algebra 2. It will delve into more advanced topics than that of a standard honors Algebra 2 class and prepare students for competitions such as the AMC 10 and Mu Alpha Theta.

Requirements

Students are required to have completed Algebra 1.

Instructions
  1. 1. Download Zoom on a personal device situated in a learning environment.
  2. 2. Click on the view calendar link located on the homepage or in the class dates section of your course. This will take you to a google calendar with the dates and times of all the classes.
  3. 3. Once you have registered, you will be sent the meeting ID and password for your class. Copy this information.
  4. 4. Go to Zoom and enter the meeting ID.
  5. 5. The class is a total of 1.5 hours. However, there will be a short 5-minutes break after 45 minutes. We will email you a new meeting ID for the second half of the class. Please make sure to rejoin because this half of the class will cover application of the topics that were taught

Here, an introduction to various competitions such as FAMAT and AMC will be given. Scoring will be discussed, as well as general strategies to succeed on the tests.

Common algebraic manipulations that are seen in AMC and MAO are presented, as well as a variety of factorizations and techniques. This will help students to immediately recognize these when presented in a problem.

Clever ways to use the fundamental theorem of algebra, remainder theorem, and factor theorem to simplify problems and make them easy to solve.

Arithmetic and geometric sequences and series will be discussed in depth, as well as common tricks that are seen on competitions tests.

Introduction to modular arithmetic, and problem solving involving finding remainders of complicated numbers and last digits of numbers.

In geometry problems, you are often asked to find a missing angle given a diagram. This is known as angle chasing and there are a few common methods that allow us to easily accomplish this.

Similarity and congruence of different 2D shapes will be discussed, as well as common techniques to find the areas of these figures.

An introduction to various counting and probability techniques that are seen on the AMC.
